CDGC hosted the 10th Anniversary edition of the Croydon Cyclone on the weekend of 16/17 Sept 2017. We called it the Xyclone and it was a great event.
With the Grass getting a late cut, the final bales taken away on Friday morning, and a lot of strimming the course looked fantastic. And with the exception of some annoying showers on Saturday afternoon the weather behaved itself!
Saturday mornings round, played in very benign conditions saw a magnificent 49 (-11) from Freddy Unt, his booming sidearm ripping up the Lloyd Park course.
Lunches were supplied by Si Luard's fabulous burrito van Luardos. Mighty fine.
The rain did eventually arrive and it did have an effect on the afternoons play. Freddy kept his lead, with Croydons SI Luard, Dan Ryan, and Sam Stevens chasing hard in the Men's Open Division.
In the women's open div, Kati Poder matched her personal best in the morning (74) and then smashed it with a terrific 70 in the afternoon. Kati would go on to hold on for the win against arch rival Sian Lee.
Sunday saw Freddy continue his steady play and he held on through the morning 18 and the final 10 holes. The final round saw a flurry of fantastic putts from all 5 of the players, with newly crowned British Champion, 15 year old Declan Bransby get into the final and then shoot the best score in the final by 3 and climbed up to joint 2 nod with Silky Si Luard.
But it was Freddy who took the title with a fabulous performance and was the first Cyclone Open Champion to standard atop the brand new podium.
Croydon's Jester Wilson won the Masters division (Old 'uns division for the worn out!) by a 10 shot margin.
Patrick Green, another Croydon Member, took the Advanced Am title, pipping Tournament Director Tom Lowes and Strimming Superstar Caleb Damanhuri making up an all Croydon 1,2,3.
Sami Havuluoto won the Intermediate Ams, Mark Rasch winning the recreational.
Emily Hamilton won the Junior Girls Division.
It was a great weekend with great people.... here's to the next 10!
